|
|
I took the liberty once again to try and find a battery mod that worked with my UX and after figuring out that having an external TH55 battery by itself was dumb, I decided to mod my broken EB40. I took out the chip and battery out of the EB40 and placed my TH55 battery and an extra UX50 battery in the EB40 then ran wires from the EB40 to my UX to connect to the battery port. Since I took out the original wiring in the EB40, this left me with no way to charge. I decided to use my earlier USB mod as my way of charging my device. The downside is that I have to keep my case home now but I'm going to try this for sometime and see how it goes. Both the UX and TH batteries are both 5.2V according to LaptopForLess.com.

Guys!!, I've just did something I was trying to do from long ago and I've finally done it.
I've modded my EB40 to have a TH and UX battery in it and my UX to have a UX battery in it. I now have 2 UX batteries and 1 TH battery all powering my UX in a small size . Here are some pics...
Best part of all is that I did not have to mess with my UX at all. That means I can buy an EB40 tomorrow and use it on my UX just fine. I also can put a regular UX battery in my device and have no problem.
Any Questions ?

Day 1
I fixed an issue. I split the connection in the UX. If you look at my second set of pics, you see the internal battery is connected to the foil. This worked for outputting power but when it came to recharging, it interfered with the EB40 batteries' power. So I split the connection. I made one connection go to the foil and another to the internal battery. This way, the power would split in both directions, just like in Hippo's mod . Will do a more indepth review but so far after a complete charge and viewing one video, my power has not alternated as much as before.
Day 2
Ok, I tested my battery today and it worked with flying colors. I have pics below. As I said above, I split the connection and that allowed me to charge and power my UX. I also noticed that the UX can run without a battery connected. I connected my USB cable and removed the battery and it didn't shut off. Really cool. The battery meter says External Supply and Full.
Here are the pics I promised.
The chip on the UX is the EB40's motherboard
EDIT: According to this site... http://products.sel.sony.com/semi/energy/productinfo.html
My UX + Modded EB40 has a total of:
1 UX --> 840mAh
1 UX --> 840mAh
1 TH --> 1300mAh
Total of 3 Batteries at 2980mah OMG!!
DO NOT ATTEMPT WITHOUT PRECAUTION. I messed up my EB40 due to a stupid mistake. It can happen to anyone.

Here is an image of my mod and some info...
This is a layout of the mod I performed in my UX50 and EB40. This mod will allow you to only charge via USB due to the other connectors are covered by insulating tape as well as the two prong positions at the ends of the UX connector is used to transfer current (3.7~4.2v) to UX to add to the mAh of the UX battery increasing your device usage time. It also works the other way around when charging.
Be careful, I recommend keeping the device attached to the EB40 at all times due to the foil can tear as well as placing the UX on a standard JC40 cradle with this mod will send 5.2v of power directly to the UX's (4.2v max) battery. Thus causing major issues. Be careful. It may look easy or it may look hard. DO NOT ATTEMPT IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. GET A MULTIMETER IF YOU DO TRY TO ATTEMPT THIS. HELPS A LOT!!

I've modded this project once again removing my internal battery and running my UX soley off of my EB40 batteries due to when I charged my unit, my internal battery received most to all the current. So, when it reached its 4.2V cutoff, my device stopped charging my EB40 batteries. Leaving my UX with 4.2V and my EB with 4.18 or even 4.10V. My device would lower in % in the first 1/2 hr of usage. I'm going to test this setup out and report back to you guys.
Brown Wire - Pin 1 - USB Charging (5V+) Mod
Red Wire - Pin 2 (cut from system) - EB40 Positive Feed
Black Wire - Pin 4 - Ground/EB40 Negative Feed

Eureka!!! This fixed the issue. I added the Running Power battery back in my unit yesterday and made it direct the power to the EB40 (through pin 3 [cut from system] and pin 4). Then I made the EB pick up the currect and connect it to the parallel network of positive wires and then redirect that current to pin 2 [cut from system]. The battery connector (which I cut from the Running Power battery is then connected to pin 2 and pin 4 and connected to motherboard.
This system is better than the other two I had because the EB + UX Internal Battery all work together as one parallel unit when charging. Before, the current will discharging came together to power my unit but when I charged my unit, the charging current had less distance to travel to get to my internal battery so once my internal was 4.2V, it stopped charging. This caused my EB batteries to be left out of a full charge (thus not giving me full performance).
By being this mod this way, I get a 4 battery-parallel connection sending power to my UX, and when I charge, the 4 battery-parallel connection receives the current and will cut off once all are filled due to they receive the current at the same time.
The Advantages
-Full Charged Batteries
-Less wiring inside the UX
-More efficient with Pins available
The Disadvantages
-UX and EB need to be together all the time, or UX will not power on. [But if I connect pin 2 and 3 together, UX will power on if EB is disconnected.]
As for a battery test, I went today with my UX with the dial matched up with the A in the title [Adjust Brightness]. I am now home after 9 hours in school and my unit's lowest level was 96% battery life. Truely amazing. I was watching music videos today but only a few. I was listening to the Podcast 60 during school.
I also almost broke my EB again so I'm not going to open my device again since I've got what I wanted now.
Pics:
Cut pins 2 and 3. Pins 1 and 4 are connected to system still.
Battery terminals connected to pin 3 and 4 after pin 3 is cut. Battery connector is connected to pin 2 and 4 after pin 2 is cut.

|
|
Since I've mostly finished the main EB40 Mod, I've always wanted to add an LED to show the battery is being charged inside the case since the LED opening and CHARGE text is there already. So I did this but it FAILED. Now, it was not fully a failure. There was only one factor that messed it up, HEAT. Yep, I got a somewhat massive LED from a friend and added it to my EB mod like so...
I used the 5V that Pin 1 took in from the UX USB mod and directed it to the LED then out to ground/Pin4. After less than 10 minutes of charging, I felt the heat around the CHARGE LED area and unplugged my UX and took the LED out. I'm going to look for a 5V led that emits very little to no heat. Hopefully I can find some. I went to Radio Shack and they had no 5V LEDs only 6V, 10V and 50V. If I find any, I'll add it to my mod.
